If you watched last night’s debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, you likely felt either disappointed, if a Biden supporter, or elated, if a Trump supporter. For everyone else, who fervently wishes that they had a different choice, you likely felt uninspired.
The overall impression I got is that Trump is a bully who brashly lies and seems to be interested in gaining office so he can enrich himself, if the number of times he talked about money and how much everything costs is any indication. Biden seems to be a well-intentioned, but slightly befuddled, elderly man.
I noticed that Biden mentioned a recent ranking of presidents, from best to worst, in which Trump ranked lowest. I was curious enough to look it up. Here is a link to the results: Presidential Greatness Project
In short Presidential historians were asked to rank presidents on a scale of 1-100. Here are the top ten:
1 Lincoln 93.87
2 FD Roosevelt 90.83
3 Washington 90.32
4 T Roosevelt 78.58
5 Jefferson 77.53
6 Truman 75.34
7 Obama 73.8
8 Eisenhower 73.73
9 LB Johnson 72.86
10 Kennedy 68.37
Biden ranked 14, at 62.66. Trump ranked dead last, at 10.92, well below everyone else.
Trump may tell himself, and his followers, that he is the greatest ever. But, those with some perspective and expertise will tell you he is not. Far from it.
So, that’s our choice. Either Biden, who is elderly but is well-liked, and surrounds himself with advisors—none of whom have quit, in contrast to Trump’s administration, which was marked by turmoil and turnover. Or Trump, who would subvert our democracy for his personal gain and the gain of his cronies. Who didn’t flinch at his supporters storming the capital and threatening to kill his Vice President. Who refers to heroes who died for our country as “losers” and “suckers” as reported in the Atlantic Journal, excerpted below:
“When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, near Paris, in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.
“Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.” Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’ – The Atlantic
So, who will you pick?
I don’t want to pick either of them. But, because it is so important to vote for democracy, it would have to be Biden. Sad that these are the only two candidates we have. So many have wished for different choices but our elected officials have not listened, until it is a bit late: i.e. last night. Only now are there murmurings of dissent and calls for Biden to step down.
